Bertalan Farkas is a fighter pilot, space explorer, astronaut, esperantist.

As part of the Interkosmos program, he became the first Hungarian to go into space (Hungarians thus became the seventh nation whose representative went there.)

Founding member of the International Association of Astronauts, staff member of the MTA Interkosmos Council research group, founding member of the Space for Earth Foundation. With his activities, he won international recognition for Hungary, and he is still involved in the promotion of space research.

His name is preserved by the asteroid 240757 Farkasberci.
